I was holding out hope for Lady In The Water, but it was just okay... "C" is an accurate grade...

What I watched last week:

I finished this season (or at least the first half) of The Sopranos. I'd give the season a solid "B+".

I watched the Criterion version of Silence of the Lambs and listened to the commentary track the next day. It'd been, like, six years since I'd seen it last...what a fantastic movie. I feel silly rating this movie, but it gets an "A".

Shop Girl is sweet, honest and funny movie. I can't recommend it highly enough. One of the best "relationship" movies I've seen in a long time. "A-"

and I watched a Preston Sturges movie called The Great McGinty. The reason to watch his movies is for the dialouge, I think. Some sharp and even subtle dialouge in this one. It's a sort-of rags to riches story, but not quite. "B-"

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
As a big Texas Chainsaw Massacre fan I have to say this prequel that
showed how Leatherface and his family became crazed killers was well
worth renting, especially as R. Lee Ermey again rocks as the sheriff.

Oh man Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Beginning SUUUCKED! They spent about 2 seconds on Leatherface's "origin" and the rest of the movie was interchangable with any other slasher movie out.

I thought it was pretty good but ONLY when I took it as its own film and not as a part of the Chainsaw legacy.

A drama about the everyday life of four female friends. I only rented
this because it was written & directed by Nicole Holofcener. I liked both

she misfires a bit on this one. Stars Catherine Keener, Jennifer Aniston,
Frances McDormand and Joan Cusack.

Movies I watched this weekend:

The Devil Meets Hitler. One of the strangest movies I've ever seen. How did this movie get made? WHY the hell was this movie made? I'd tell you more about it, but you'd call me a liar if I told you about some of the shit that happens in the movie. Has to be seen to be believed. Made during WWII.

District B13. Kinda enjoyable science-fiction action flick co-written by Luc Besson. Not great, not bad...enjoyable in a Street Fighter kind of way.

Christmas in July. Another Preston Sturges flick. Again, fun little distraction that's nice to listen to. Really fucking short too. Barely over an hour long.

Hollywoodland
About the mystery surrounding the death of the actor who
played Superman George Reeves. Ben Affleck plays Reeves.
Also stars Adrien Brody, Diane Lane, Robin Tunney & Bob Hoskins.
RATING: B-

Trust The Man
I thought I would give this film about two couples having relationship
problems a shot because of the cast David Duchovny, Julianne Moore
Billy Crudup, Maggie Gyllenhaal and it's writer-director Bart Freundlich
who's past films included World Traveler and The Myth of Fingerprints.
However, it fell short of even being a good movie.

Just watched Antibodies and was really impressed.

On first glance it's a Se7en meets Silence of The Lambs-esque serial killer film, but it's really well done and goes more into the whole good/evil line being blurred.

Half Nelson
A young innovative inner city teacher with personal problems
and a drug habit forms a bond with a high risk female student.
Ryan Gosling in the lead role gives a stunning performace and
the music for the film done by Broken Social Scene is perfect.
RATING: A-

The Departed
This crime drama with an all-star cast (Jack, Leo, Damon, etc) is
quite good, but not great. In fact, I don't even think it is one of
Martin Scorsese's top films or that it should be up for Best Picture.
RATING: B+

Marie Antoinette
Director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides) captures
the rock star type lifestyle of Marie Antoinette. Plus, she uses 80's songs
throughout the film. Stars Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman & Steve Coogan.
RATING: B+

Two magicians who are partners become bitter rivals when one of their
tricks goes wrong. Stars Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine &
Scarlett Johansson. Directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Following).
RATING: B+

Babel
One event in Morocco cuts across the lives of four groups of people that
live in different parts of world. Good, but not great. Another movie that
should not have been up for Best Picture.
RATING: B

Infamous
I liked the other Capote movie better, but still this is worth checking out,
especially for Daniel Craig's performance as the killer Perry.

Wassup Rockers
A punk rock skateboard movie about Spanish teens in LA.
Directed & written by Larry Clark (Kids, Bully).
RATING: B

I saw this. The beginning was fine, if a little bit of a Clark rehash. Then the kids went to Beverly Hills and that's when things got progressively weirder and weirder. I wasn't sure if the campiness was intentional or not. In the end I enjoyed it, but partly for how goofy and bizarre it turned out to be.

Fast Food Nation
The movie was inspired by Eric Schlosser's excellent book about
the Meat Industry and Fast Food Chains. It stars Greg Kinnear &
Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace). It was directed by
Richard Linklater (Slacker, SubUrbia, Tape, Before Sunrise, etc.)
RATING: B

The Science of Sleep
Director Michel Gondry's (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) film
about an eccentric young man whose dreams cross into his real life.
Stars Gael García Bernal (Babel) & Charlotte Gainsbourg (21 Grams).
RATING: C

Stranger Than Fiction
Kind of Being John Malkovich light, it's about a man who hears
in his head a female author narrating his actions as his everyday
life starts to be directly influenced by the book she is writing. Stars
Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman & Emma Thompson.
RATING: C

Let's Go To Prison
I expected more from this comedy written by Reno 911's/The State's
Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon & directed by Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show).
Plus, it starred Arrested Development's Will Arnett.

In the Realms of the Unreal: A documentary about so-called "outsider artist" Henry Darger. It was good, probably as good a movie as could have been made about someone that nobody really knew.

loudQUIETloud: A Film about the Pixies: A documentary about the Pixies' 2004 reunion tour, how awkward they are as a band and how poorly they communicate. It didn't prevent me from liking them, but it did its damnedest. Still, if you're down with music documentaries it's as entertaining as anything, except Dig!, but that's not fair because that's the greatest movie ever made.

I liked "In the Realms of the Unreal" quite a bit.

I've been meaning to see the Pixies doc. but haven't really had a chance.

Matewan: John Sayle's 1987 (I think) movie about a 1920s West Virginia mining strike. It was pretty good, as good as any really preachy movie about historical America ever is. It was as good, say, as Glory. The real reason I was interested was because I knew it featured a teenage Will Oldham, aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, one of the cooler people on earth. Every time he was onscreen me and my friend started laughing out of glee; the novelty never wore off.
The only thing I didn't like about the movie is that no one sang that song "Sixteen Tons," though I guess that would've been a flagrant anachronism being it was written in the 1940s. But come on, they could've fudged the numbers some.

Oh man, I saw a billion movies recently.

Fitzcarraldo: Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski making it happen in the Amazon. Everyone knows how rad this is.

Rocky Balboa: The same as every other good Rocky movie, and thus another really good Rocky movie. I liked it a lot.

Klaus Kinski: My Best Fiend: Herzog's documentary about how insane Klaus Kinski was. I'm pretty sure they were both crazy, and we just heard Werner's side of things. Still pretty cool, but it has the annoying Herzog documentary thing where he talks and talks over footage, saying things like "This footage gives me a feeling of sadness." Although I guess when it's a personal topic the voiceover is more applicable than in, say, Grizzly Man.

The Weather Underground: Good documentary about the militant Weathermen that blew up all kinds of shit in the 1970s.

I Am a Sex Addict: Caveh Zahedi's uniquely autobiographical style examines his sex addiction. I liked it okay, but I like Caveh already because of the short film he did with Will Oldham and how ridiculous he was in Waking Life.

We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen: One of the better music documentaries around. Great interviews and lots of live footage. I loved it.

The Velvet Underground: Under Review: One of the worst music documentaries around. They got Mo Tucker and Doug Yule, but all the other interviews are with 30-something guys that wrote books about the Velvets and recite the conventional wisdom about each album. Super disappointing.

I think that's it.
