Despicable Me
Deftly walks a fine line for a movie that is filled with super-villains. Not too many huge laughs, but keeps you chuckling consistently. Also not too schmaltzy, which is a trap that all-ages movies can fall into. Julie Andrews, as Gru's mother, is the scene-stealer.
Grade: B-plus

Dinner With Schmucks
I'm finally convinced to go give Dan In Real Life a try because Steve Carrell makes anything at least watchable. This entire movie hinges on his ability to pull off his character, Barry, and he delivers. Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis and Jemaine Clement are also very funny as The Straight Man, The Weird Guy and The Odd Foreigner, and lead a great supporting cast of comics and comic writers. (Okay, so maybe we're not stretching here, but good comedy doesn't have to be groundbreaking, just funny.) Stay until the end of the credits.
Grade: B-plus

The Slammin' Salmon
Another movie from the Broken Lizard guys, who excel in a movie genre I love: stupid, funny movies that are smartly aware of how stupid they are. Sometimes it works(Beerfest, one of the great movies of this generation), sometimes it doesn't (Club Dred). This one isn't a laugh riot, but it's not terrible. Michael Clarke Duncan gets the most laughs as the ex-boxing champ/restauranteur Cleon Salmon.
Grade: C-plus

Hot Tub Time Machine
A silly comedy with a surprising amount of heart; not so much the crazed sex comedy it was promoted as so much as three guys owning up to their lives and getting their shit together with thanks to their unlikely second chance. It was nice to see longtime favorites Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson more than hold their own with John Cusack. I felt like they could have gotten a lot more out of Chevy Chase's character.
Grade: B-minus

Batman: Under The Red Hood
One of the better entries from DC's direct-to-video library. Crisply animated and generally well-acted. Bruce Greenwood makes a pretty cool Batman.
Grade: B-plus

Pretty Bird
Billy Crudup and Paul Giamatti star in a fictional account of a start-up company that tried to sell the Bell Rocket Belt. Well-acted and paced, but the last half-hour becomes such a fuck-up that the overall movie is ruined.

Date Night
Steve Carell and Tina Fey (and a bunch of good cameos) save a completely implausible movie. There are moments of heavy stuff in here, which they deftly weave in and out of with the silliness and chaos that's going on around them. Could have used a grander, more Blues Brothers-style scope... except for two scenes, this movie feels very small.
Grade: B

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse
One of DC Direct's better offerings, from a voice acting, writing, and action standpoint, on par with Green Lantern: First Flight and Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths. Based on the artistic stylings of Michael Turner, which drags this movie down considerably. Granted, superheroes are supposed to look, well, heroic. Turner's art makes the males look like anemic supermodels (naturally this works better - albeit only slightly - for the females). There are some dialogue-driven scenes where'd you'd swear Superman(!!) just got back from a Botox appointment. Great job duplicating the artwork (which made the original "Superman/Batman" issues all but unreadable), terrible job in not knowing better.
Grade: C-plus
